In the North American Numbering Plan, area code 909 is assigned to the area east of Los Angeles, California that includes the cities of Ontario, Riverside and San Bernadino plus major telephone users like Loma Linda University, the University of California Riverside, and March Air Force Base.
Due to the large urban population of
greater Los Angeles, area code 909 was created on November 14, 1992 as a split
of area code 714 which now serves the Anaheim area. Upon creation, area code 909
originally served customers in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Since 1992, area code 909 has been split
twice to accommodate not only the expanding population base but also the
explosive need for phone numbers for electronic devices and cell phones.
On March 22, 1997 a portion of the area code 909 was moved into area code 760 area and on July 17, 2004 additional telephone customers were transferred to the new area code 951.
