The 716 area code was, at one time, the primary area code for much of Western New York State, having been one of the original five area codes instituted in New York. The area code was bounded across the Niagara River until 1993 by the 416 area code. In 2002, the 585 area code was split from the 716 to cover the Rochester metropolitan area. Today, the 716 still provides service for much of the western portion of the state.
Counties currently within the coverage area of the 716 area code include Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Niagara Counties.
Along with the majority of the western half of the state's towns, the 716 area code provides coverage for Buffalo and its surrounding suburbs. Additional New York cities covered by the 716 area code include Olean, Jamestown, Dunkirk, Niagara Falls, and Lockport.
