Created on July 1, 1999, the 646 area code provides overlay coverage for parts of New York City. The original New York City area codes of 212 and 917 had begun to run out of numbers, necessitating the creation of a new number that would act as an overlay for the existing area codes. Today, all phone numbers dialed in the New York City overlays of 646, 212, and 917 must use a full 10-digit dialing code. Any of the three numbers may be used in this area for dialing. The 212 area code was the first area code created for the state in 1947.
