The North American dialing code 408 was created in 1959 after splitting from the original 415 area code that provided service for much of Central California. It was split again on July 11, 1998 to create the 831 area code which covers the surrounding Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey counties. Original dialing in the 408 coverage area in the 1940s was done manually, with districts of the city used as “numbers”. It was not until the 408 area code was created that numeric, standard dialing was adopted.
Primarily located within Santa Clara
County, small parts of the 408 area code also provide service for Southern
Alameda County.
Cities provided service by the 408 area
code include Alviso, Campbell, Coyote, Cupertino, Gilroy, Holy City, Los Gatos,
Milipatas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mount Hamilton, New Almaden, Redwood
Estates, San Jose, San Martin, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunny Vale. In
addition the California Water Service, IBM, and Onizuka Air Force Base use the
408 area code.
