The 212 area code was the original area code provided to New York City when the North American Dialing Plan was developed and implemented in 1947. It is also the only five pulse dialing code assigned in the United States, making it faster to dial with the old rotary dialing systems. Only the borough of Manhattan still uses the 212 area code today and is overlaid by the 646 and 917 area codes. The other boroughs of New York City currently use the 718 and 347 area codes. Cellular phones in all five boroughs of New York currently use 917, 646, and 347.
The 212 area code only provides service for a small portion of New York County.
The Manhattan borough of New York City is covered by the 212 area code alone. The 212 area code has never provided service to any cities other than New York since its inception in 1947. Today it only covers one small portion of the city and is overlaid by the 646 and 917 area codes.
